You probably didn't know...
The original Igbo names for melon are "élìlì" or "énìnì". However, the term "egusi" was borrowed and renamed to "Egwusi" in Igbo.

Some people refer to it as "élìlé" or "énìné"— these names are synonymous.

In the Nsụka region, it is called "ekeke". In the Mgbo part of Ebọnyị, it is called "Ahụ", Likewise in Uturu. Ọhaọzara refers to it as "énìnì" or "énìné". In Ọhafịa, it is called "Ahụn".

If you explore other parts of Igbo land, you will find similar variations or alternative names, with the exception of egusi or egwusi.

It is important to remember that "egwusi" or "egusi" is indeed an Igbo term, and it is widely used across the Igbo-speaking regions.

When something is borrowed into a language, it becomes an integral part of that language. Thus, it is acceptable to use "egwusi" or "egusi". However, it is also crucial to be aware of the original names for things before language contact led to changes.

Ondo: Why Aiyedatiwa was asked to write resignation letter – Speaker The Speaker of the Ondo state House of Assembly, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, has given the reason behind the resignation letter which the deputy governor of the state, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was asked to write.
