JUST IN: Appeal court sacks Bauchi Deputy Speaker, days after nullifying Speaker’s election

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has nullified the confirmation of Jamilu Umaru Dahiru Barade, the Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The ruling overturns the judgment of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, ordering rerun elections in specific polling units of Bauchi Central State Constituency.

The appellant, Aliyu Abdullahi Ilela of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleged over-voting in the affected units, prompting the appellate Court to annul the prior confirmation of Barade and call for fresh elections in the specified areas.

In response to this judgment, the Court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract the earlier issued Certificate of Return to the Deputy Speaker and oversee the rerun election in the designated polling units.

The decision comes in the wake of recent judicial actions, including the removal of the Speaker of the House, Abubakar Sulaiman, by the appellate Court, indicating a series of legal shifts within the Bauchi State House of Assembly.
