Breaking: Nigeria's economy stumbles as banks, electricity workers join nationwide strike

On Tuesday, Affiliates of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) in Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria complied with the directive of the labour unions to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.

The NLC and TUC issued a directive on Monday instructing all their affiliates and workers across the country to withdraw their services from Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the President of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions, Mr Oluwole Olusoji, confirmed the strike in the banking sector.

He said members have been advised to comply.

He said members had been advised to ensure the safeguard of lives and property from people who might be used to take undue advantage of the situation.

“We will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds,” Olusoji said.

Some banks were shut in some part of Osun, Lagos, Ibadan and Abuja as at the time of filing this report.

According to Blueprint electricity workers have shut down the national grid following the declaration of an indefinite strike.

“Electricity workers are NLC members; they’ve followed the directive by organized labour to withdraw their services from Tuesday,” Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for Transmission Company of Nigeria confirmed.
